The Walt Disney World Resort, better known as Walt Disney World or Disney World, is the largest and most visited amusement destination of Florida. The park was opened in 1971 and draws about 52 million visitors every year.

Walt Disney World Resort consists of four theme parks, two water parks and several shopping and entertainment areas. Besides that, about Disney resorts and hotels are on property. At the sports complex Disney’s Wide World of Sports you can do several sports. The area has many stadiums and sport fields. Walt Disney World Resort also has its own transportation system.

After the opening of Disneyland in Californië in 1955, Walt Disney wanted to build a second, larger park. He started to search for locations in 1959. He bought a piece of land in Lake Buena Vista with a surface of 111 square kilometers (an area larger than Manhattan). The whole area was used to build Walt Disney World on.

On October 1st 1971, Walt Disney World with its Magic Kingdom in Florida opened its doors. Walt Disney himself had passed away by then, but his brother Roy took over from him. Originally the resort would have been named “Disney World”, but as a tribute to his brother, Roy Disney insisted that the resort was named “Walt Disney World”.

Later the Walt Disney World Resort expanded more and more with different theme parks, waterparks and hotels.

Besides Walt Disney World, there are lots of other amusement parks to be found in Orlando like Universal Studios, Sea World, Bush Gardens, and many more. There is something to do for everyone!
